Medicare Provider & Prescriber Numbers

Every doctor needs a Medicare provider number to bill at each clinic location. Prescriber numbers are required to write PBS prescriptions. These are separate from AHPRA registration.

International Criminal History Checks & Declarations

IMGs must declare their international criminal history and provide Certificates of Good Standing from every country where they have practised.

AHPRA Registration, HPOS & Portal Access

Set up your online accounts for AHPRA registration, Medicare provider services and primary source verification of qualifications.

GP Fellowship Pathways & Training Programs in Australia

The main pathways to GP fellowship in Australia — FSP, PEP, AGPT and ACRRM. Each pathway has different eligibility, supervision requirements and timelines.

Pre-Fellowship Program (PFP) — by State

The PFP (formerly MDRAP) enables non-vocationally registered doctors to gain GP experience before joining a fellowship pathway. Administered by Rural Workforce Agencies in each state.

Visas & Immigration for Doctors Coming to Australia

The most common visa for overseas GPs is the Subclass 482 (Skills in Demand) visa, which is employer-sponsored and typically lasts 4 years.

Overseas Driving Licence Conversion — by State

Overseas licences are typically valid for 3 to 12 months depending on the state. After that, you must convert to a local licence. Each state has a different process.

Tax, Superannuation, TFN & ABN

Australia's financial year runs July to June. GPs working as contractors need a TFN and ABN. Tax rates differ for residents and foreign residents.

Medical Indemnity Insurance Providers

Medical indemnity insurance is mandatory for all registered practitioners in Australia. Minimum $20 million per claim is standard. Compare the five national providers below.

Schools & Education for Families

If you are relocating with children, research schools early. Public school fees apply for 482 visa holders and vary by state.

Private Health Insurance & OVHC

Doctors on 482 visas must hold Overseas Visitor Health Cover (OVHC). Compare providers before arriving.

Primary Health Networks (PHNs) — by State

PHNs provide training, workforce support and education resources for GPs and clinics. Find your local PHN for professional development opportunities and practice support.
