On a 482 visa with general AHPRA registration, you have two main options. First, the after-hours exemption — you can bill Medicare at non-DPA locations during after-hours times (Mon–Fri 6pm–8am, Sat from 1pm, all day Sun and public holidays). Apply via form HW019. Second, the locum exemption — allows up to 6 months at a specific non-DPA clinic with no hour restrictions. After 6 months you must move to a different clinic or convert to after-hours only. Share the clinic’s postcode and I’ll check the DPA classification for you.

Both lead to specialist registration in roughly 6–8 months of supervised practice. EAP is faster and simpler — you apply directly to AHPRA with no RACGP comparability assessment required. But it’s only available for UK (MRCGP + CCT post-2007), Ireland (MICGP post-2009), and NZ (FRNZCGP post-2012) qualifications. PEP SC goes through RACGP first — a comparability assessment (Part A), then job offer approval (Part B), then AHPRA registration (Part C). It’s available to a wider range of overseas GP qualifications. If you have an eligible EAP qualification, EAP is the faster route. Neither requires fellowship exams.

No — fellowship alone does not remove the DPA restriction. There’s a two-step process. Step 1: achieve fellowship (FRACGP or FACRRM on your AHPRA register — note you must submit the update form yourself, RACGP won’t notify AHPRA). Step 2: apply for the locum exemption via form HW019 to Services Australia. Once approved, the DPA restriction is removed and you can bill Medicare at any location. Fellowship does end 19AA restrictions and gives you full A1 billing rates — but the 19AB moratorium continues until 10 years from your first AHPRA registration.
