Locum GP Jobs Sydney — Find GP Roles Across New South Wales

Sydney is Australia's largest city and its most competitive GP market. More clinics, more patients, and more practice types than anywhere else in the country — but also more noise making it hard to find the right fit. HeartBridge is a marketplace where you connect directly with clinics, see real information, and keep control of the relationship.

The GP Market in Sydney and New South Wales

New South Wales has the largest population of any Australian state and the most diverse GP market. Sydney alone accounts for over five million people, with patient demand spanning every specialty interest, billing model, and practice type. Beyond the metro, NSW stretches from coastal communities to the Blue Mountains, Central West, and the outback — each with distinct workforce needs.

The Sydney metro is MM1, but GP shortages exist in pockets — particularly in Western Sydney and the outer growth corridors where population is expanding faster than GP supply. NSW as a whole has over 250 active locum roles at any given time, making it the largest locum market in the country.

Inner & Eastern Sydney

MM1, generally non-DPA. High patient volumes, diverse demographics, and a wide range of practice styles — from bulk-billing centres to specialist-referral mixed-billing practices. Competitive but high-volume market.

Western Sydney

One of Australia's fastest-growing regions. Some DPA-eligible clinics. Strong demand for GPs across Blacktown, Penrith, Liverpool, and Campbelltown. Large multicultural patient populations with complex care needs.

Central Coast & Illawarra

Commutable from Sydney with a mix of MM1 and MM2 areas. Strong community-based general practice. The Central Coast and Wollongong corridor offer a lifestyle alternative to Sydney with consistent GP demand.

Blue Mountains & Greater West

MM2–MM3 areas within 90 minutes of Sydney CBD. Enhanced Medicare rebates, DPA-eligible clinics, and workforce incentive programs. A practical option for GPs who want higher remuneration without relocating far from Sydney.

DPA and MM Opportunities Near Sydney

Inner Sydney is MM1 and largely non-DPA, but DPA-eligible clinics exist in parts of Western Sydney and the outer suburbs. Moving beyond the metro, DPA and higher MM classifications become increasingly common.

The Modified Monash classification transitions quickly once you leave the Sydney basin. The Blue Mountains, Southern Highlands, and Central Coast fringe include MM2–MM3 areas where Medicare rebates increase to the A7 rate at 80%. Further west — Bathurst, Orange, Dubbo — MM4–MM5 areas offer Workforce Incentive Program (WIP) payments, Bonded Bulk Billing Incentives (BBI), and other retention programs.

DPA status is address-specific and independent of MM classification. Always check the Health Workforce Locator for current status. For IMGs under the 19AB moratorium, DPA status determines where you can bill Medicare — see our DPA guide for full details.

Locum GP Work in Sydney

Sydney's locum GP market is the largest in Australia. The sheer number of clinics means consistent demand for leave cover, after-hours sessions, ongoing part-time arrangements, and short-notice shifts. Whether you prefer a single regular locum day or rotating across multiple practices, Sydney has the volume.

Locum billing follows standard Australian models — either a fixed daily rate or a percentage of billings under your provider number. You need a separate provider number for each clinic address. Sydney's high patient volumes mean percentage billing can be particularly strong for experienced GPs who bill efficiently.

Credentialing is required at every clinic independently. Build a complete digital credentialing folder — AHPRA certificate, indemnity insurance, police check, immunisation records, and BLS certificate. Ensure your indemnity insurance specifically covers locum work.

For GPs open to travel beyond the metro, regional NSW offers strong locum demand with higher remuneration and workforce incentives. See our Rural NSW GP Jobs guide for opportunities outside Sydney.

IMGs and GP Jobs in Sydney

Sydney has Australia's largest IMG community and the most established support networks for international medical graduates. GP Synergy — the regional training organisation for NSW and ACT — coordinates training posts across both metropolitan Sydney and regional NSW.

During training: IMGs on supervised pathways (FSP, AGPT, EAP, PEP, ACRRM IP) work at approved training posts. NSW has training positions across the state. FSP and ACRRM IP require MM2–MM7 locations (outside metro Sydney); RVTS requires MM5–MM7. AGPT posts are available in both Sydney metro and regional areas.

After fellowship: Once FRACGP or FACRRM appears on your AHPRA register, locum and permanent roles are available across Sydney. For IMGs still under the 19AB moratorium, placements must be at DPA locations unless you hold a valid exemption. The locum exemption is available to visa holders with general registration or any fellowed doctor.

Sydney's multicultural population means many practices value multilingual GPs. The city's diversity, established IMG networks, and proximity to regional NSW training posts make it a natural starting point for international medical graduates building their Australian career.

Living in Sydney as a GP

Sydney is expensive — there is no getting around it. But it also offers the most diverse lifestyle, the largest cultural scene, and the widest range of professional opportunities of any Australian city. For many GPs, the trade-off is worth it.

Housing & Cost of Living

Australia's most expensive city for housing. Inner-city and Eastern Suburbs are the priciest. Western Sydney, the Central Coast, and Wollongong corridor offer more affordable options while remaining within commuting distance of metro practices.

Lifestyle & Climate

Temperate climate with mild winters and warm summers. World-class beaches, harbour lifestyle, and extensive national parks. Strong dining, cultural, and entertainment scenes across the city.

Schools & Families

Extensive range of public and private schools. Major universities include UNSW, University of Sydney, Macquarie, and Western Sydney. Family-friendly suburbs across the metro — the Northern Beaches, Hills District, and Sutherland Shire are popular with families.

Transport & Access

Most extensive public transport network in Australia — trains, buses, light rail, and ferries. Sydney Airport is the country's largest international hub. Traffic congestion is significant; many GPs choose to live close to their primary practice.

Message clinics directly and build relationships on your terms.

Hearts Rating System

Two-way verified ratings from completed shifts. GPs rate clinics, clinics rate GPs. In a competitive market like Sydney, your reputation becomes your strongest asset.

Calendar Match Protection

Privacy Shield

Your identity stays hidden until both sides express mutual interest. Explore opportunities without risking your current position — particularly valuable in Sydney's interconnected GP community.

Sydney FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions — GP Jobs Sydney

01Are there DPA locations in Sydney?
Yes. While much of inner Sydney is MM1 and non-DPA, parts of Western Sydney and outer suburbs carry DPA status due to workforce shortages. DPA designation is checked per clinic address — not by suburb or postcode — using the Health Workforce Locator at health.gov.au. Clinics in the same suburb can have different DPA status. Always verify current status before accepting a role, as DPA designations are reviewed and change.
02What MM classifications exist around Sydney?
Sydney is MM1 (metropolitan). The Blue Mountains, Central Coast fringe, and Southern Highlands include MM2–MM3 areas. Further west — Bathurst, Orange, Mudgee — MM3–MM5 areas are accessible within a few hours. Higher MM classifications attract the A7 Medicare rebate at 80% (versus A2 at 60% for MM1) plus workforce incentive programs. See our MM Classification guide for full details.
03Is Sydney too expensive for locum GPs?
Sydney has the highest cost of living of any Australian city, particularly for housing. However, it also offers the highest patient volumes and the most diverse range of practice types. Many locum GPs offset housing costs with strong billing output. Western Sydney and the outer suburbs offer more affordable housing with good GP demand. For GPs willing to commute or work outside the immediate metro, the lifestyle-to-income ratio improves significantly.
04Can IMGs work as locum GPs in Sydney?
IMGs who have completed fellowship (FRACGP or FACRRM on AHPRA register) can do locum work. If still under the 19AB moratorium, locum placements in Sydney must be at DPA-eligible clinics — or you need the locum exemption. Visa holders with general AHPRA registration can access the locum exemption without fellowship. IMGs on supervised pathways (FSP, AGPT, EAP, PEP) cannot take independent locum shifts until training is complete.
05What is the Rural Doctors Network NSW?
The Rural Doctors Network (RDN) is the NSW-funded health workforce organisation that supports the GP workforce in rural and regional New South Wales. RDN provides relocation support, workforce data, locum placement assistance, and connects GPs with rural NSW opportunities. They are a practical resource for GPs considering roles outside Sydney — particularly in regional areas where workforce shortages are most significant.
06What training organisations operate in Sydney and NSW?
GP Synergy is the regional training organisation (RTO) for NSW and the ACT, coordinating AGPT training posts across the state. Training posts are available in both metropolitan Sydney and regional NSW. For IMGs, NSW offers FSP, EAP, and PEP pathways through various approved practices. ACRRM IP requires MM2–MM7 locations (outside metro Sydney), and RVTS requires MM5–MM7. Contact GP Synergy or RACGP/ACRRM directly for current training availability.

Important: DPA designations, MM classifications, billing arrangements, and workforce incentives change — always confirm details directly with the clinic and with Services Australia (13 21 50) before accepting any role.
